Though this is a novel Dickens would read with some interest, it is Jules Verne and Darwin who are the key to Marie-Laure's future. He sells drugs for Octavio, who comes up with a plan to rob the Oakland Powwow. His mother is in jail and his father doesn't know he exists. He lives with an old woman, Maxine, whom he loves very much and takes care of after she breaks her hip.
